Being Prideful

This week’s Brite lesson helps kids see that Jesus shows His love through serving. As they learn about Jesus washing His disciples’ feet, kids are seeing that He chose humility and was willing to serve others.

Kids are surrounded by messages that tell them to put themselves first, be the best or make sure they stand out. This week, we’re helping them see that Jesus showed a different way. He didn’t worry about whether a job seemed important. He simply chose to love and serve others.

This week, ask your kid if there is anything they sometimes feel “too good” to do. Talk about one simple way your family can serve someone else and remind them that serving others is one way we can show the love of Jesus.

Here’s how we discussed this topic and how you can discuss it at home:

Discuss: What does it mean to be prideful?

Discuss: How can pride keep us from serving others like Jesus did?

Discuss: What do you think God has to say about that?

Say: It’s okay to be proud of yourself when you accomplish something or finish a hard task. Pride becomes an issue when we start to think we are too good to do certain things or to help others. For example, if a teacher asks someone to take out the trash, but they think that is too dirty of a job for them, they are being prideful. Another example would be a kid who was asked to help a peer with math but felt like it was a waste of his own time. First Peter 5:5 says: God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. In today’s story, Jesus shows us how to put others ahead of ourselves without thinking too much of ourselves. Jesus is the God of the universe, yet He humbled Himself to wash His disciples’ feet. We can be like Him when we choose humility and serve others.
