Broken Promises
We all experience broken promises in our lives. Inevitably, someone in a kid’s life will not live up to their word, either intentionally or accidentally. Many children have experienced this more than their fair share. They may have had trusted adults repeatedly break promises, making it difficult to trust anyone. It may be difficult for them to understand that God always does what He says because adults in their lives have not. In this week’s Brite lesson, kids learned God is different from people. God always does what He says He is going to do. Point your kids towards God’s faithfulness. Because God never changes, kids can trust that He won’t change His mind or break a promise.
Here’s how we discussed this topic and how you can discuss it at home:
Discuss: What does it mean to break a promise?
Discuss: How can broken promises make you feel about trusting people?
Discuss: What do you think God has to say about that?
Say: You may have heard someone say that you can really only trust yourself. People usually say that when they’ve been hurt by someone’s broken promises. Unfortunately, it is true that sometimes people will let us down. Sometimes people break promises or don’t keep their word. Everyone sins, and many times others’ sin hurts us. When that happens, it can make it difficult for us to trust anyone. However, we can trust that God is different from people. He is perfectly holy and can’t sin. He will keep all of His promises. Even if we struggle with trusting people, we can always trust God to do what He says. Psalm 118:8 says: It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man. God is faithful even when people may not be!
