Death

This week’s Brite lesson reminds kids that Jesus is alive. As they learn about His death and resurrection, kids are discovering that Jesus defeated death and gives us hope that lasts forever.

Elementary-age kids are beginning to understand that death is permanent, and that can bring up questions or fears. Some kids may have already lost someone they love, while others may not have thought much about death before. This week, we’re helping kids understand that because Jesus rose again, those who trust in Him can have hope even when death feels scary.

This week, ask your kid what they think about when they hear the word “death.” Give them space to share any questions or fears they have, and remind them that Jesus is alive and that we can trust Him with even the things that scare us most.

Here’s how we discussed this topic and how you can discuss it at home:

Discuss: Have you ever been to a funeral? What was it like?

Discuss: What kind of feelings do you think kids might have when they think about someone dying?

Discuss: What does God have to say about death?

Say: Every person will eventually die on Earth. Because our world was broken by sin, one of the consequences was death. Death is always sad, and thinking about it can be very scary. Those are normal feelings. If someone you know has died, it is normal to cry, grieve, and even be angry. In 1 Thessalonians 4, the Bible tells us that because we have believed in Jesus, we can grieve with hope. Of course we will still be very sad if someone dies, but we can have hope knowing that if they have trusted in Jesus they will live forever with Him. If we have trusted in Jesus as our Savior, we don’t have to be afraid of death because we know that heaven with Him will be the very best. Only God decides when people are born and when they should die. He is the One who is near to us when we are hurting and gives us the hope and peace we need. And one day, God will create a new heaven and a new earth where there will be no more death or pain.
