How did the world begin?

For generations science classes have taught theories such as the Big Bang Theory and evolution. Today’s generation is exposed to a variety of viewpoints, theories and “evidence” that they view on social media and may automatically believe, even if the information isn’t legitimate. In today’s post-Christian culture, we can’t assume all kids automatically know the world was created by God. Kids learned in this week’s lesson that God is our Creator. Be cautious in how you respond if your kid offers a different viewpoint. Listen and try to understand where they are coming from, but point them back to the truth of God’s design in creation.

Here’s how we discussed this topic and how you can discuss it at home:

Discuss: What would you say if someone asked you where the world came from?

Discuss: What are some ways people believe the world began?

Discuss: What do you think God has to say about that?

Say: You may have heard someone say something like, “Animals and people evolved from tiny molecules over the course of millions of years” or “The world was created in a big bang—or explosion.” Some people believe God was involved in these processes, while others say that God doesn’t exist at all. But we can know and trust that what the Bible says is true. Genesis 1 tells us God created everything by the power of His Word. The beauties and mysteries of creation could not have happened by accident. They show us how awesome our Creator is. Psalm 19:1 says: The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims His handiwork.
