Moving

Depending on age and circumstances, moving can be traumatic for kids. Moving can mean leaving behind friends, family and everything that is familiar. Maybe your family has recently moved and your kids are struggling with the adjustment. Kids may display moodiness. They may either go overboard seeking attention or hide in the shadows. You can support kids by being a safe place for them to share emotions. Give them time to adjust to big changes and recognize some kids are actually grieving. In this week’s Brite lesson, kids learned that Abram was called by God to leave behind everything. You can help kids understand that even when we have to do hard things, God promises He is always with us.

Here’s how we discussed this topic and how you can discuss it at home:

Discuss: Have you ever moved to a new house? Have you moved to a new city?

Discuss: What would be the hardest thing about moving?

Discuss: What do you think God has to say about that?

Say: Moving is a really big deal, especially if you move to a new community. In some ways you start all over—new school, new friends, new neighborhood. That can feel very sad or scary. It can also be exciting. It is normal to feel all kinds of big emotions when we experience big changes like that. In today’s story, God told Abram to pack up and leave everything he was used to. I’m sure Abram felt all of those emotions too. Back then moving like Abram did would have been a huge deal. But he obeyed. God is trustworthy. God promises He is always with us even when we have to do hard things. Isaiah 41:10 says: Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.
