Pluralism
Kids are growing up in a world filled with different beliefs and messages about God. They may hear that all religions are basically the same or that every belief is equally true. Through social media, entertainment and conversations with friends, kids are constantly exposed to the idea that people can each choose their own version of truth.
In this week’s Brite lesson, kids will hear the story of Elijah on Mount Carmel and discover that the Lord is the one true God. While our culture often teaches that any spiritual path is good enough, the Bible points us to the one true God who alone has power, authority and truth.
As you talk with your kid this week, encourage honest questions and conversations about different beliefs they may encounter. Be careful not to speak harshly about people from other religions or backgrounds. Instead, help your kid understand that Christians can show kindness and respect to others while still believing that Jesus is the truth and that God alone is worthy of worship.
Here’s how we discussed this topic and how you can discuss it at home:
Discuss: Have you ever heard of people who believe in different gods? What have you heard they might believe in?
Discuss: Some people say it doesn’t matter what god you believe in, as long as you believe in something. What do you think about that?
Discuss: What do you think God has to say about that?
Say: In our world, there are many other religions in which people believe in other gods. Some religions, like Hinduism, believe in multiple gods. The Bible is very clear that there is one true God. God has created one way for us to have a relationship with Him, and that is through His Son, Jesus. John 14:6 says: Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” We should always be respectful and kind to people, even if they believe differently than we do. But that doesn’t mean all beliefs are the same. When we have the chance, we should share with others the truth of who the real God is and how much He loves them.
