Right and Wrong
Kids are hearing a lot of messages about right and wrong. They may hear that everyone gets to decide truth for themselves or that something is only wrong if it hurts another person. For kids, it can become hard to sort through what the world says and what God says.
In this week’s Brite lesson, kids will hear about Isaiah’s encounter with God’s holiness. When Isaiah saw how holy God is, he immediately recognized his own sin and need for forgiveness. Kids will learn that God does not change based on culture, opinions or feelings. Because God is holy, He is the One who defines what is right and wrong.
As you talk with your kid this week, help them understand that God’s standards are not meant to harm us or take away joy. God does not give us boundaries to make life worse, but to lead us toward what is good and true. And even when we fail, we are not without hope. God offers forgiveness and grace through Jesus.
Here’s how we discussed this topic and how you can discuss it at home:
Discuss: Who decides what things are right and what things are wrong?
Discuss: Are there things that people in the world think are okay to do that are different from what God says?
Discuss: What do you think God has to say about that?
Say: You may have heard someone say, “This is my truth.” Or sometimes people believe they can decide what is right for them. God gives people a lot of freedom, and He has a unique plan for every person’s life. However, He doesn’t have different sets of right and wrong for each person. What if a really bad guy decided murder was okay? That wouldn’t make sense. Isaiah 5:20a says: Woe to those who call evil good and good evil. Because God is holy, He sets the standard for right and wrong. He knows how life works best. He sets right and wrong because He loves us. If people decide right or wrong on their own, they make those decisions selfishly, trying to do what they want most. God is right and perfect in all He does. He decides right and wrong for our good and His glory.
