Special Needs

This week’s Brite lesson reminds kids that every person is made in God’s image and deeply loved by Him. As kids learn about Jesus healing a man with a disability, they’re discovering that Jesus cares about people and that every person has value.

Kids may know someone with a disability at school, church, in their family, or in their community. They may also have questions about why some people have disabilities or why Jesus doesn’t always heal people today. This week, we’re helping kids see that people of every ability are loved by God and should be welcomed, valued, and included.

This week, talk with your kid about ways they can help others feel included. Encourage them to notice someone who may be left out, invite them to join in, and show kindness in ways that help everyone know they belong.

Here’s how we discussed this topic and how you can discuss it at home: 

Discuss: In today’s story Jesus encountered a man who couldn’t walk. Have you ever met someone who used a wheelchair or had some other type of special needs?

Discuss: How have you seen kids treat kids with special needs? How do you feel about that?

Discuss: What does God have to say about kids with special needs?

Say: God created every single person in His image. He created everyone differently. Some people are tall and some are short. Some have blue eyes and some have brown. Some people can’t walk or see or hear. Some learn or speak differently. What they all have in common is that they are deeply loved by God and created in His image (Genesis 1:27). We can show the love and kindness of Jesus to every person we meet. Don’t be afraid to get to know someone who may be a little different than you. God made each person special and He loves each one of you!
