Tolerance

The book unChristian shares a study that revealed 90 percent of respondents viewed Christians as being judgmental. This generation is growing up in a culture that views having beliefs about absolute right and wrong as intolerant of others. Your kids may have heard that it is unloving or intolerant to label behavior as sin or to say what someone else does is wrong. They may also have heard that things the Bible says are wrong aren’t that bad. This week’s Brite lesson helps kids discover sin is truly wrong and God still loves people very much. We can follow His example by loving people but not being okay with sin.

Here’s how we discussed this topic and how you can discuss it at home:

Discuss: Have you ever heard someone say, “Don’t judge me!” What did they mean by that?

Discuss: Is it ok to disagree with something that someone else is doing or disagree with something that someone else believes?

Discuss: What do you think God has to say about that?

Say: In our world today, many people feel that they should be able to do whatever they want, regardless of what God says. Many also feel that you are intolerant or judgemental if you disagree with them. God’s Word tells us what is right and wrong. Those things don’t ever change, even if people want them to. We can’t control the actions of others, but you are not being mean if you disagree with sin. Ephesians 4:2 instructs us to speak the truth in love. As followers of Jesus, our job is to love people like Jesus does, and we can also speak God’s truth with love.
